Sue Carpenter Lucas grew up in Mesa, Arizona, and has been interested in the arts all her life. She won the grand prize in a city-wide art contest at the age of five and, while growing up, earned several state scholastic art awards. Her work since then has included portraits, sketches, sculpture, and painting, and has been exhibited in the United States and in Italy.

Sue has enjoyed writing poetry and other pieces through the years. As a teenager, she published a limited-edition family newspaper she called Carp Capers, in which she wrote humorous articles about family life in the Carpenter household.  She took piano lessons from an early age, and has performed in choirs throughout her life.

She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and after reading an address by Boyd K. Packer (The Arts and the Spirit of the Lord) Sue decided to begin writing music about The Prophet Joseph Smith. A few weeks later, when a church representative asked her to compose music for a program about Joseph Smith, she already had five of the pieces written.
Some of those songs were later incorporated into her cantata, “Like Unto Moses,” which has been performed in various states across the nation. When her husband’s Air Force assignment took the family to Verona, Italy, the cantata was translated into Italian and performed across northern Italy as “Grande Quanto Mose’.

Sue continues to compose music and to enjoy her art and writing.
